I Got Bored and Tried a Bunch of Artificial Sweeteners

I was flying a few weeks ago and I got bored during a layover. I went to the airport Starbucks and I noticed that they had a rainbow of artificial sweeteners. All the colors I know of! Blue, pink, green, and yellow! I was bored enough to decide that it would interesting to taste and compare them all. So I grabbed one or two of each color and stuck them in my pocket. Then I got on the next plane, fell asleep, and forgot that they were there. They ended up on my kitchen counter at home where they sat for a month or so, and today I decided to actually try them all out.

Sweet-N-Low, Pink
Dextrose, Saccharin, Cream of Tartar, Calcium Silicate
This tastes like my grandmother's house. This was the sweetener in all of the tea and coffee there. Sweetness is not overbearing, but it has a bitter, metallic aftertaste. It takes me to a very nostalgic but not entirely happy place.

Equal, Blue
Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Aspartame, Acesulfame Potassium
A more intense sweetness than Sweet-N-Low. No metallic aftertaste, but the characteristic aspartame flavor that I remember from diet sodas in the 90s.

Splenda, Yellow
Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Splenda Sucralose
More intense sweetness than Sweet-N-Low, but very little metallic aftertaste

Stevia, Green
Dextrose, Stevia Leaf Extract
Weird, super-bitter flavor underneath the sweetness, very harsh, don't like that at all

Sugar, White
Sucrose
Tastes good. Nowhere near as strong as all of the synthetic flavors.

My Favorite: Splenda
That doesn't mean I'll buy or use Splenda, I won't, I'll continue to just use sugar, but Splenda was my favorite of all the ones I tried.
